Media Centre
Background/Purpose
It was observed that many activities held in Choiseul which are geared towards its development were not being documented. The activities include traditional cultural dances, carnival celebrations and mini documentaries.
Thus the media centre was introduced to assist in the audio and visual recording of all activities in Choiseul. Equipment was sourced through support from the Australian High Commission and the Ministry of Social Transformation, Youth and Sports. A team of persons, who live in Choiseul, skilled in various components of media, were assembled to volunteer their time and talent to form a committee.
Use of recorded material
The recorded material is intended to be secured in an archive and copies made available upon request, to local television stations and other organizations.
Recorded material is also available to the public in appropriate volumes, for reflection and storage for their own archives. It is the hope that students may use material recorded by the media centre to complement the teaching of local culture done at schools.
Training
A key goal of the media centre is media training. Different groups of individuals have been trained in the proper use of video cameras. Training has been limited due to the unavailability of professional cameras at the media centre. A few persons have also received basic training in video editing and in conducting interviews.
Upcoming Projects
To assist in the recording of songs composed by local writers and arrangers, future plans are being made for a sound proof room. Funding is also being sourced for recording equipment.
Also, a short documentary is planned to highlight the contribution of Choiseulians to our country St. Lucia. |
